Yes, we are all recovering children, but that doesn’t mean that this child within us who has suffered the vicissitudes of our rather scarred and imperfect history needs to direct our present choices.
This is a time for healing. As Jesus called the little children to Him, each of us is being asked to take this inner child who has not been understood or listened to, who has been devalued and trod upon—to take this little child into our arms and hold this dear being. Love the child that has gotten hurt, lost and feels forlorn. Let this child recover its innocence and its beauty.
Children need protectors—advocates, for children’s voices are rarely listened to in our world.
The question is will you be an advocate for this beautiful and innocent child who lives within you?
If so, hold that child in your heart. Wrap your arms around this little unprotected being and just love him or her. Love motivates more than scolding or prodding will. The warmth of love nurtures the seeds of beauty, of goodness, and truth that is the essence of all that is truly real. What is ‘really real” lives in Spirit and cannot be touched by the world.
Do this as often as you can remember. Each time you are troubled, know that your child is crying and asking for help. Heed this voice.
And notice how you feel inside as you give this child the safety of your love. Let yourself be comforted. You deserve it, for you are God’s beloved. God has created you, and continues to cherish you.
It is your inner yearnings that are summoning you into something more profoundly good than you have ever imagined. Listen to the yearnings of your heart. You’ll hear the voice of Spirit calling you. Heed the call though it may be very soft at times. Recovery is possible only in the arms of love.
