In the Judea/Christion tradition the devil literally means the adversary.
Goethe gave us a wonderful statement as to the purpose of this adversarial force. In Faust, Mephistopheles (the devil) is asked who he is. He replies, “A part of that power which always wills the evil and always works the good.” Invisible Partners, John A. Sanford, Pg. 56
So, even the devil must work for God!
This mysterious and troubling force does seem to trip us up. Sometimes it stops us right in our tracks, causing huge emotional and physical turmoil.
But what if it is really helping us? What if it is clearing out what is no longer needed in our lives?
This is my belief. In Romans 8:28 we read, “All things work together for good.” That means everything! No matter how bizarre things seem.
My experience is that which obstructs us is truly inviting us into a new and more wonderful experience of life. And it will stretch us.
Something new is unfolding, and even if it takes the devil to help do the work, it will get done!
Nothing opposes God, for the Lord, our God, is One — not two.
Let’s learn to dance with the All, even those devlish things!
