Do we layer more anger on top of our anger? Or shame ourselves for feeling this way?
Are we angry and ashamed that we are not more in control of ourselves—of life?
If so, we are just adding fuel to the fire.
Since emotions are part of the human journey, can we just be compassionate toward these negative feelings that hurt so much?
When we are hurting, we don’t need more hurt. We need love and kindness.
It costs nothing (except time and attention) to be compassionate towards ourselves in times of need—and we are in need when painful emotions are flowing through us!
My experience is that I must become aware of these emotions before I can choose compassion.
Awareness is golden. When we are aware we can work with whatever the situation may be, no matter how troublesome it is.
Compassion leads the way towards resolution and harmony.
Awareness helps us find meaning in life’s events, no matter how long that may take. Eventually things begin to make sense and we can see a larger picture. We can see how it all fits together.
Life begins to be viewed as a great tapestry, beautiful, layered and deeply textured. It has meaning and we experience peace.
Awareness stems from mindfulness.
Mindfulness helps us awaken from the dream that we are an existential self, alone, floating around in a sea, sometimes having good experiences and sometimes bad—at times feeling happy, but often feeling lost, confused and worried.
This dream has nightmarish qualities.
When the Buddha was asked who he was, he replied only, “I am awake.”
The Buddha had awakened from the dream of being a separate self.
When I experience myself apart and isolated from others, feeling angry, ashamed or lost, I am living a nightmare! I can awaken by remembering how interconnected everything is.
Quantum physics has shown that reality (what is) shows up both as a wave and a particle.
Each moment this is our truth. We are both the particle (independent), and the wave. Our “particleness” dissolves into the vast oneness of all that is.
But this is paradoxical. How can we be separate when the universal wave is constantly flowing through us, refreshing us and making all things new?
When we feel separate and forget the “waveness” of all life, we will have many ups and downs which easily cause anger, fear and shame.
All we need do is remember! Remember that we are just as much the wave as the particle. This brings us back into balance.
But it is compassion that helps us maintain this awareness.
It’s hard to be human. Humans often forget they are spiritual beings having a human experience. Believing we are separate puts us into a trance.
Awareness breaks the trance.
A skillful daily (and minute by minute) spiritual practice brings us back into a place of compassion and harmony. This is happiness. This is trust that Universal Energy is always flowing through us, guiding us into safe waters—no matter what it appears.
“You are not just a drop of water in the ocean.
You are the whole ocean.” Rumi
May we remember our wholeness.
May we live in ease and kindness.
