We think we are a separate person that carries our ID with us. Our driver’s licenses, credit cards, passports, etc. give us “proof” of who we are.
We mistakenly think we are this person and miss that which we truly are—part of the great mind that connects us all. There is a deep invisible Source, a flowing energy field that gives rise to all that is—to all matter, all form. But we are not the form. We are much greater than the form, the shape.
There is a Buddhist saying: “What I see I cannot be.”
What do we see? Who do we see?
Looking in the mirror we see a body that we may feel good about, or not. No matter, it’s all a case of mistaken identity.
So maybe we could lighten up a bit and not take it all so seriously.
Looking out the window we may see trees or flowers. But we are not those trees or flowers.
Do we identify with our personality? Our profession? Our successes? Our failures? If so, we are mistaken.
We are not any of these things. We are a mysterious soul-being that is being breathed by universal energy that flows through us, creating and recreating us continually.
If we can see it, we are the observer, not what we are seeing. We are an energy being that is constantly changing. We are connected to everything, but things are not our identity, for things are constantly flowing and changing. They are not solid, permanent and stable. Their appearances beguile us into thinking they are solid, but, as quantum physics reveals, below the atom at the deepest level is a quivering mass of energy that has no fixed form. It quivers and becomes according to the thought and emotional energy it receives. It manifests from our thoughts, words and attitudes.
We are a flow of universal energy that is in movement continuously, although usually very, very slowly. But we take on a material form, and we suffer if we identify with the form.
We have thoughts and attitudes, but we are not our thoughts or our attitudes. We have emotions, and we are not our emotions.
We are so much more than anything we can see.
We are a mystery of spiritual energy that cannot be clearly defined. We are a shape-changer as well as being re-shaped each moment.
But one thing is sure. If we can see “it” (whatever we are noticing or looking at, whatever the emotion or thought that we see in our mind) we are not that. For we are the seer.
Identity to any specific object is a myth. Identity derives from words such as “same; exactly alike.” We are not the same two seconds in a row. And we are never exactly like something else. For we are a fluid, reflective being that makes choices that can manifest.
We are a flow—similar to a moving river that cannot be pinned down. It is a case of mistaken identity to think we are “such and such, or so and so.” We may presently be living in this bodily form, but this, too, will eventually pass away.
Instead we are the very spirit beneath all form and shape. We are the energy that keeps moving and choosing. We can’t be bound in any form.
If we wish to live happily I suggest we remember that we are not whatever we are viewing or thinking.
We are like a great poem or huge mystery that has no beginning or ending. We are a vital part of a universal system of love—connected energy— in which no part is truly separate or left out.
This soul-being that we are is infinite, always in a state of changing and becoming, and therefore undefinable.
Let’s humbly open to this new being that is always in process. For we are not the sole Creator, but we choose how we see. We can choose to open to a new awareness of how deeply we are all connected. We can help bear each other’s burdens as we share our compassion with everyone. For everyone is just another aspect of the one life we are all living.
We are all in “this spiritual soup” together, and each of us makes choices.
What is our choice this moment? It’s important to be aware, for this becomes part of our destiny.
In awe and amazement,
